The basics

What Are Balloon Columns?

Columns, towers, pillars and posts all mean the same thing: balloons stacked up a pole on a weighted base.

A balloon column stands on its own, usually 5 to 8 feet tall, so it can go nearly anywhere: both sides of a front door, each end of a stage, along a ceremony aisle, at the corners of a dance floor or beside an expo booth. No other balloon piece adds height to a room as easily, and nothing has to be hung from the ceiling.

Columns are also the budget-friendly way to mark an entrance. A pair costs less than a full balloon arch, and you can join the tops with an arch later for the classic columns-plus-arch entrance that school dances and store openings love.

Column styles

Balloon Column Styles

The pole and base never change. The pattern you put on them does.

Classic stacked columns

Tight four-balloon clusters stacked straight up the pole, in one color or in bands. Simple, bold and the lowest-priced column we make.

Spiral balloon columns (2, 3 and 4 colors)

Shift the colors a notch in every cluster and they wind up the pole in a candy-stripe twist. A two-color spiral stays clean and sharp, three colors (red, white and blue for the 4th, say) is the most popular, and four colors suits rainbow parties and team themes.

Organic balloon columns

Mixed sizes in relaxed clusters give a softer, fuller column that matches an organic arch or garland. They take more balloons and cost more than classic columns, and they're the current choice for weddings and showers.

Themed and novelty columns

A column can become a shape: a palm tree for a pool party or luau, a rocket for a space-themed birthday, a pencil for back-to-school, a traffic light for a race-car party, a candy cane at Christmas. Themed columns are a fun way to dress a school hallway or a kids' party.

Toppers

Balloon Columns With Stars, Numbers and Other Toppers

The topper is what ties a column to your celebration.

  • Number toppers: a 34- or 40-inch foil number for an age, an anniversary or a class year. Of all our column requests, this is the most common.
  • Foil stars, hearts and crowns: stars for grads, hearts for Valentine's and anniversaries, crowns for a quinceañera or a sweet 16.
  • Bubble balloon toppers: a clear bubble balloon stuffed with confetti, feathers or a name.
  • Grad caps and diplomas: for grad parties and senior nights.
  • Logo or letter panels: for company events and ribbon cuttings.

Sizing

How Tall Is a Balloon Column, and How Many Balloons Does It Take?

A standard column stands about 6 feet before the topper goes on.

Column heights and approximate balloon counts
ColumnHeightBalloons (approx.)
Mini or tabletop column2–3 ft12–20
Standard classic or spiral5–6 ft40–60 (11-inch)
Tall classic column7–8 ft60–80 (11-inch)
Organic column5–7 ft60–100+ (mixed sizes)

These counts cover the column body. Toppers, base clusters and accent balloons at the foot add a few more.

What size balloons are used for a column? Most are built from 11-inch latex in clusters of four, which makes a column roughly 18–20 inches wide. Organic columns mix in 5-inch and 16- to 18-inch balloons for texture.

Pricing

What Do Balloon Columns Cost in Orlando?

A single column usually runs $85 to $275, depending on the style and the topper.

Placement

Where Balloon Columns Work Best

Columns look their best in pairs, framing something worth looking at.

Entrances and driveways

Either side of a front door, a clubhouse door or a vacation-home driveway, so arriving guests know exactly which house it is.

Stages and DJ booths

One at each end of a stage or DJ table puts the speaker or the band between them in every photo.

Ceremony aisles

Short columns lining the aisle, or two tall ones where the couple says their vows.

Dance floors

Columns at the four corners, sometimes linked overhead with a garland canopy.

Expo and trade show booths

Brand-color columns help a booth stand out down a long aisle at the convention center on International Drive.

Storefronts and grand openings

A pair at the door of a new shop on Colonial Drive or Sand Lake Road catches the eye of passing traffic.

Occasions

Balloon Columns for Graduations, Weddings, Birthdays and Holidays

Late May and early June is column season in Orlando, when grad parties fill the calendar, but columns suit almost any event.

  • Graduations: columns and towers in school colors with grad caps, stars or the class year, for high school grad parties, prom, senior night and college commencement parties.
  • Weddings and bridal showers: ivory and gold or blush organic columns at the ceremony and the reception.
  • Birthdays: a column with the age on top, for everything from first birthdays to 60th birthdays.
  • Gender reveals: pink and blue columns with a question-mark topper.
  • Corporate events and trade shows: columns in brand colors for booths, lobbies and openings.
  • Holidays: Christmas, Halloween, Valentine's Day, Easter, Thanksgiving and red-white-and-blue columns for the 4th.
  • Quinceañeras and sweet 16s: columns framing the court's grand entrance.

Outdoor columns

Outdoor Balloon Columns in Orlando Weather

Columns are top-heavy and catch every gust, so outdoor columns get built for it.

  • Outdoor columns get heavier bases, and we tie them off to a post, railing or fence when one is close by.
  • Air-filled columns outlast helium ones outdoors by a wide margin, especially in summer heat.
  • Shade makes the difference: direct summer sun fades and pops latex within hours, and dark colors heat up first.
  • Summer storm fronts bring sudden gusts in the afternoon, so for storefronts and driveways we place columns where the building blocks the wind and keep a plan to move them under cover.

Longevity

How Long Does a Balloon Column Last?

Several days inside. A few hours in full summer sun.

An air-filled column in an air-conditioned room lasts several days, often a whole week. In outdoor shade it lasts about a day, longer between December and April when the weather is mild. In direct summer sun, columns start to cloud over and pop within a few hours. For indoor events they can be built one to two days ahead, which helps with morning graduations and school events.

Questions

Balloon Columns in Orlando: FAQ

What are balloon columns?

Balloon columns are freestanding stacks of balloons built on a pole and a weighted base, usually 5 to 8 feet tall. They're used in pairs to frame entrances, stages, aisles and dance floors, often with a star or number on top.

How much do balloon columns cost?

Our classic columns start at $85 each, spiral columns at $99, organic columns at $160 and towers with toppers at $180. Most entrances use a pair.

How many balloons are in a balloon column?

A classic column of 5–6 ft takes roughly 40–60 balloons at 11 inches, a 7–8 ft column takes 60–80, and an organic column in mixed sizes takes 60–100 or more.

What size balloons are used for a balloon column?

Most columns use 11-inch latex balloons in clusters of four. Organic columns combine 5-, 11- and 16–18-inch balloons.

How long does a balloon column last?

Several days indoors when air-filled, about a day in outdoor shade, and a few hours in direct Orlando summer sun.

How far in advance can a balloon column be made?

One to two days ahead for indoor events. Outdoor columns in the warm months should be set up the same day.

Can I do a balloon release in Florida?

No. Since July 1, 2024, Florida law treats intentionally releasing balloons outdoors as littering, and it comes with a fine. For a big moment, try an indoor balloon drop, a giant confetti balloon you pop, or columns with a bubble-balloon topper instead.

Is there a difference between a balloon column, tower and pillar?

Not really. All three describe a freestanding stack of balloons on a pole and weighted base. People tend to say tower when the column has a large topper.

Do balloon columns need helium?

No. Columns are air-filled and held up by the pole and base. Only a floating topper or a bubble balloon might use helium.
